Implementing Customized Automatic Source Transfer Scheme and Generator Paralleling System for Verizon

As part of a reliability improvement project to minimize facility downtime to a greater level, Verizon elected to enhance their emergency generation system.  As part of this project, our engineers and field service team collectively implemented a customized turnkey solution to meet the specific customer requirements at one of their cell sites in Washington DC.

Emergency power is an integral part of a cellular site, particularly a site that also houses emergency response and public safety communications.  In the event of a power interruption to such a site, calls are dropped, data flow is interrupted, and vital communications are compromised.  Thus, it is imperative to ensure that proper and effective backup generation systems are in place.

To meet the desired emergency requirements of this project, a specialized paralleling and automation system was developed using specialized Woodward control devices and solid-state controllers.  System functionality included:

• Automatic Source Transfer to Generator

• Generator Paralleling & Synchronizing

• Automatic Restoration to Utility Source

• Full Manual Wrap-Around Capability

• Hardwired Safety Interlocks
